Who we are
[Source: Disability and Development Partners, 2006]
As a relatively small UK based organisation working entirely with partner organisations in Angola, Mozambique, India, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Nepal, DDP does not have the resource to be able to keep a high profile in the UK and we rely on networks of supporters and interested people to spread awareness of our work.
We are delighted to use this page to (re)introduce ALMA members to DDP to help nurture the connections that will enable disabled people in Mozambique and Angola to be included in mutually beneficial community links and development activities.
If you would like to invite a DPP speaker to an event please contact Maggie Owens on 020 7700 7298.
Our vision
A society where disabled people have equal social, economic, civil and political rights.
Our mission
To develop partnerships with organisations of and for disabled people, international agencies and governments to:
- Set up programmes for socio-economic empowerment, capacity building, advocacy, and education, health and rehabilitation that improve the lives of disabled children, men and women
- Promote appropriate rehabilitation technology.
- Create conditions in which inclusion can thrive.
Our principles
We are guided by five principles in our work:
- Disabled women, men and children have an equal right to full and active participation in society. Respect for the opinions and wishes of disabled people.
- Working with and learning from the knowledge and experience of our partners.
- Understanding the political environment and cultures of the countries where we work.
- Behaving in ways which respect the experience and opinions of disabled people and others.
We know that
- Disabled people are among the most deprived and vulnerable groups in any society.
- Disabled people in the South face the inter-linked discrimination caused by disability and poverty.
- Exclusion and stigma bar disabled people from their rightful role in society.
