Fairtrade certified crunchy peanut butter from Equal Exchange

[Source: Traidcraft Bulletin, July 2007]

The peanuts come from smallholders of the Ikuru Association (Ikuru means strength in the Makua language of northern Mozambique), a business company partly owned by producers’ associations of Nampula province and the south of Niassa.

Founded in 2003, Ikuru has 8,500 members organised into foras (producer groups) producing peanuts, groundnuts, cashews, sesame and beans. It was established by producers to enable them to reap larger returns through ownership of their products in successive stages of the supply chain. The key benefits to Ikuru members include confidence that they can sell their product at a good price and not be cheated as they were in the past by traders who use rigged scales.
