ALMA Responds to Emergencies in Partner Dioceses

Summary

ALMA Strategy Group has agreed to respond to three significant emergencies in our partner dioceses by sending funds to assist with the churches’ relief work. ALMA supporters are also welcome to contribute to these relief efforts too (please use the gift aid form which enables donors to indicate which project they wish to support).

ALMA is giving £2000 to each partner diocese for Relief Work in:

  1. Messumba and Niassan Lakeshore after the floods. More details …
  2. Lebombo - in the wake of the tragedy at the Hulene rubbish dump in Maputo which killed 17 people and affected many more. More details …

Saturday 10 March update:

Bishop Vicente, Messumba priest Revd Mwechumu, and Messumba Village Chief Massanche crossed the river and visited families at the resettlement camp who were affected by the floods. They presented supplies and mosquito nets.

Lebombo relief work post Hulene tragedy

The Anglican Social Action team in Maputo have visited the site of the Hulene dump disaster as well as the shelter where 122 families are being assisted; their numbers may increase.

Mercio Langa writes: “We urge everyone to extend their solidarity hand giving food and personal hygiene products so that we can channel to the Reception Center. ASA is ready to channel products in a coordinated way on behalf of all. We are in an emergency situation. Blessings”

Flooding in Uige and Songo

Augusto Domingos, Archdeacon of Uíge has said two congregations belonging to the parish of Epiphany, in the area of Quica, were totally destroyed.

A spokesman for the Civil Protection and Fire Brigade, Isildo Meote, who provided information to Angop Tuesday, explained that in the municipality of Songo rain also destroyed two primary schools, the local Catholic church, the administration's coverage and the residence of Kinvuenga commune employees.

He said that in the municipality of Uíge, rain destroyed 180 residences in the neighbourhood Ana Kandande, seven in Cabonda and a church.
