ALMA, the diocesan partnership with the Anglican Church in Angola and Mozambique, is delighted that the Bishop of London has announced Bishop Rob Wickham, the new Bishop of Edmonton, as the next Bishop for ALMA in London.

Bishop Rob will be joined by the newly appointed Archdeacon of Hampstead John Hawkins in helping to drive forward the work of ALMA as it continues its ambitious programme of strengthening the link between London and its partner dioceses in Angola, Lebombo and Niassa.

The new Bishop for ALMA, Bishop Rob Wickham, said:

“I am delighted to be serving the Church of Jesus Christ in this capacity.

“I was taught so much by the African community in Hackney, and I look forward to working with ALMA, as we, through each other, discover the truth of God’s generosity in Jesus which transcends all cultures and contexts. In the meantime, our brothers and sisters across ALMA remain in my prayers.”

ALMA Co-ordinator, Sheenagh Burrell, said the entire ALMA London Team was very pleased to welcome Bishop Rob and Archdeacon John and looked forward with great confidence to the years ahead as the ALMA partnership deepens and grows.

Bishop Rob previously served as Rector at St John at Hackney from 2007 and Area Dean of Hackney in 2014. His work has put him at the forefront of re-energising the Church in the area, engaging with the local community to support and contribute to the extensive regeneration of Hackney. His theological thesis was on the creative use of church buildings.

Archdeacon John Hawkins has served at a number of churches in the Diocese of London, including St Matthias and St John Hendon. He has also been Bishop’s Missioner at King’s Cross London since 2013 when he was also made a Prebendary of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Bishop Rob and Archdeacon John come to their roles after the previous Bishop for ALMA, Paul Williams, and former Archdeacon of Hackney, Rachel Treweek, left London to become Bishops of Southwell & Nottingham and Gloucester.
