Elections for the National Assembly of Angola on Friday 5 September

Bishop André to the friends of the Anglican Diocese of Angola worldwide:

Service
The service on 31 August 2008 at Cidadela Stadium

I am writing to greet you and let you know that the churches in Angola had this Sunday (31 August) a special moment in which all Christians from different denomination came together and prayed for the coming elections, asking for the hand of God, his love and compassion for the suffering people of Angola. We hope that this election will be different from the previous one held in Angola in 1992. We need elections which will consolidate the peace, reconciliation and that will ensure the growth of the recently installed democracy.

I know that the Diocese of London and other people around the world are praying for us, therefore our many thanks in advance for your prayers.

Please find attached the picture for the referred service last Sunday at Cidadela Stadium.

Yours in God’s mission

+André Soares

“Ecumenical service shows common interests for peace” reported the Angola Press agency, focusing on a message from the Speaker of the National Assembly. (Note that the Portuguese word for service of worship culto has been translated cult.)

Meanwhile the “Angola vote campaign looks increasingly one-sided” says Reuters article.

We who believe in a God of justice and righteousness know we just have to pray alongside our Angolan brothers and sisters in Christ. This is a prayer which the whole Diocese of London is called to use this week.
