Update on Floods in Mozambique and Angola

Dear ALMA REPS,

Thank you for your responsiveness to the flood crisis in Mozambique and Angola, and to the Appeal to raise funds for our sister dioceses which was launched on Ash Wednesday. It is heartening to learn from Peter Southwood, our Link Officer, that the first donations have already been received. Many of you will be reporting on these developments to your congregations this weekend and the update received from Bishop Dinis yesterday may be something you wish to share with them:

MOZAMBIQUE CRYING FOR HELP

Mozambique is being hit by two contrasting calamities: floods in the center and drought in the south.

Both these two calamities have resulted in the destruction of both crops for the year and the seeds for the coming times. The response consists in providing seeds, so that when floods are gone, people will replace those which have been taken by waters and when rains come in the south the crops that are now a desolating feature as they dried up completely they can replaced by seeds.

The seeds that are needed at the present moment are, among others: pumpkin, maize, nyemba beans, groundnut, cassava, sweet potatoes. For these we need to assist about 1500 families to which our Church can have access.

These two calamities (floods and drought) call for one answer: seeds

The floods that are affecting the areas near Zambeze river need, in addition to seeds, tents or alternative accommodation, food (beans, cooking oil, maize, sugar, salt, milk and tinned food) blankets, mosquito nets, soap and containers for water.

May God enlighten you as you seek to respond.

The Right Reverend Dinis Salomão Sengulane

Bishop of Lebombo

I do not want to overload your email systems with too many messages so will post updates on the floods in News. Please look there in the next few weeks.

with all good wishes,

Sheenagh
