Emergency Response to Floods in Angola

[Source: Bishop André Soares]

After long years of civil war which sacrificed thousands of Angolans and displaced millions of others to secure places with all the consequences, now the flood rains that started in January have caused human, material losses and destruction of infrastructure in already devastated regions of the country, as well as in the capital city of Luanda.

The more affected provinces are Uige, Kwanza Norte, Kwanza Sul, Kuando Kubango , Moxico. Acording to new observations about 1 million people are at risk to be affected in coming days as the rains are continuing to fall. Moxico is the most devastated Province.

Appeal

The rains which are going to continue for 4 months (February, March, April, May) are still falling mainly inland and the preliminary official toll is as follows:

  1. 2133 houses destroyed
  2. 273 schools destroyed
  3. 84 bridges broken
  4. 41000 displaced people
  5. 114 deaths
  6. More than 50 missing

In the present situation the Government of Angola has created 4 Centers for displaced people in Samba, Cacuaco, Viana and Cazombo, where up to date about 28531 people are settled under the assistance of National Civil Protection Committee.

The Government of Angola, through the Ministry of Social Affairs, announced on 7 February to all NGO’s an appeal for international support and the opening of customs duty and corridors for any emergency assistance from the NGO’s and Churches to the suffering people.

The Anglican Diocese of Angola through the declaration of Bishop André Soares has called all believers, parishes and districts to contribute in prayers and action to help the suffering people. A Diocesan Emergency Committee was created to coordinate the emergency intervention of the Diocese with Government authorities and other organisations responding.

Considering the shortness of resource available for the Church to assist the suffering people, the Diocese of Angola is calling upon the support of all Anglicans and church relief and delivery organizations in the world to support the country with material, financial and human resources to save the lives of the suffering people in Angola and serve the purpose of evangelism and salvation through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

In the appendix to this appeal the Diocese has worked on the priorities for intervention needs to be delivered to the population in the suffering areas.
