Wind Damage in Murrupula

[Source: Bishop Manuel Ernesto, Bishop of Nampula - December 2019]

We have received this letter and pictures from Bishop Manuel

Dear Friends and Partners in Mission,

Christmas greetings from Nampula and hope you had a blessed Christmas 2019.

I write to sadly inform you that on Christmas Eve an unexpected strong wind hit Murrupula area and left a devastating trail of destruction : the church and the rectory had their roofing removed and 50 communities houses were affected. Two children were caught in such uncontrolled floating zinc sheets and unfortunately did not survive. I visited the parish early today and paid solidarity to the families. It is heavily raining in the area and the rector, Fr Domingos Komakoma, and the affected families have found accommodation in their neighbours.

The church and the rectory will need new zinc sheets and all roofing accessories. The communities will urgently need plastic, bamboos and ropes in order to rebuild their houses otherwise they will lose them to ever increasing rain.

Our mission team is on the ground comforting the families and conducting more need assessment.

Our sincere apology for it may sensitize you once in your Christmas and holiday season.

Murrupula is our largest parish with 82 outstations assisted by over 170 Catechists.

Your prayers and solidarity are very much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bishop Manuel and Nampula Mission and Solidarity Team
